How did you make the b&w? A lot of conversions use a lot of the red channel (hence the chimney is fairly bright). I tend to use the channel mixer, and might have tried to use the green channel to get more even tones.
I think I did the B&W conversion in Picassa. Using the "Filtered B&W", and then using the Tuning controls to improve the contrast. The more I look at them I think I agree that the colour one works best.
